When A Cat Experiences Grief

Googoo is in mourning.

This adorable 8 year-old black cat with big eyes and a square jaw arrived at our Palo Alto shelter in June, following the death of her owner.

Googoo made a habit of hiding under the blanket in her kennel, only coming out to eat or use the litter box after staff and volunteers had left for the night.

She was sad and scared, as any animal would be after losing its family and being uprooted from the only home it had ever known.

In an effort to give Googoo a chance to relax and unwind, we sent her into foster care. It’s been over 3 months since she went to a loving home, and Googoo’s temporary parent reports that she is eating well and enjoys sitting in the window soaking up sun and watching birds pass by. She likes to climb her cat tree, and purrs loudly when being petted.

As we suspected, a loving home is exactly what Googoo needs.

Googoo would be a wonderful for one lucky family. She can live with other animals as long as they give her the space she needs, or she would be happy to be an only pet.

Because Googoo is a senior and shy, she has been overlooked by would-be adopters. We’re here to say that this girl named Goo is worth taking a chance on.
