Foster Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the time commitment?

The time commitment for fostering varies. It can be a couple of days to a couple of weeks or months. It depends on the needs of the animals. We keep underage animals in foster until they are old enough for surgery. For other animals, it will depend on their needs. We will work with you to find the right fit!

  • What supplies will I need?

Pets In Need will supply needed items such as food, a crate, toys, bedding, any medication the animal may be on. If you’d like to purchase these yourself, it is always a big help but not required. We will advise you as to which food your animal has been eating at the shelter.

  • Can I foster then adopt?

For certain animals, yes. All our foster-to-adopt animals can be found here. An adoption specialist can go over the process with you.

  • What if I work full time?

You can still foster! Cats and rabbits are great for people working full time. We also have some dogs who are suitable for being alone for long stretches of time. We’ll match you with an animal that is appropriate to your schedule and lifestyle.

  • What if I live in an apartment without a yard, can still foster dogs?

Yes! We will go over appropriate ways to get your dog outdoor time.

  • Can I foster if I have children?

Yes. Adults are the primary caregivers for all foster animals, and it is a wonderful experience for the whole family.

  • Can I foster if I have other pets?

Yes. Resident pets must be up to date on their vaccinations and at least a year old. We will discuss introducing your resident pet and your foster pet. For dogs, we may require an in-person meeting at our shelter.

  • What if my foster pet isn’t working out?

If you’re having an issue with your foster, please reach out to us right away. We have additional medical and behavioral resources to help you and your foster pet. Since we don’t always know how a pet will behave in a home, we know sometimes it’s just not a good match and that’s okay too! Our goal is to make this a good experience for the pet and the human.

  • What if I fall in love with my foster pet and want to adopt?

It happens! As the foster parent, you’ll be first in line, and we will work with you through the adoption process.
